How To Save Money on Legal Professional Fees

4-June-2019 Commercial Disputes By Mark Streeter

At Streeterlaw we understand that you are anxious about your dispute. Finding the right lawyer is the first obstacle. The second obstacle is understanding “how much will this cost?’.

At Streeterlaw, we provide value driven legal professional services which are customised to suit the dispute. We want to make legal professional advice accessible and want you to understand what that involves. Here is how we do that and what you can do to save money on legal fees.

1. Know what you want to achieve and be open to options

Explain what you want to achieve, we will explain any obstacles and what we need to help you or whether there is an alternative option available to you.

2. Be Frank in your disclosure and instructions

Be frank in providing instructions and talking to us about your concerns. Provide us with all the documents we ask for and be prepared to ask for help with that process. We understand the obstacles around document preparation and can help you navigate them.

3. If you need help, tell us.

We understand that document preparation or aspects of what we ask for is not easy. As a business you may need to authorise someone to assist or a personal to be authorised to contact this office. We understand the issues around confidentiality and we can help you set up an arrangement that will work for you, subject to the nature of the dispute.

If we receive a phone call from someone in your business such as your personal assistant, we won’t be able to take instructions or discuss your matter unless you have given them authority yourself to do so. This even extends to your spouse, children or parents.

If you wish for someone to give us instructions on your behalf or for us to communicate with, tell us over the phone or preferably over email. This will save us time of needing to chase up with you directly.

4. The Retainer

Ask us early if you have any questions or concerns

Lawyers charge in units of 6 minutes. Ten units is therefore 1 hour. The precise fees each person working on your matter charges per hour will be set out in your Legal Services Agreement. You should openly discuss any issues with payment or security at an early stage. We do not pass judgment and we are better off dealing with any costs concerns or obstacles from the outset.

If you are not sure about how something is being billed, want to check your outstanding fees or wish to receive another copy of your Legal Services Agreement, ask us earlier rather than later.

5. Ask Questions

If you have a question, prepare them and set down a time to have a discussion. We are here to guide you through the process.
